Introduction to this week’s Rediscovery for the original working sketch of The Princess of the Lake that includes an interview with Kelli J Zumwalt, who traveled from Hot Springs, Arkansas to add another layer to the story of the Lost Artist of the Ozarks.
This working drawing for The Princess of the Lake by James Yale hasn’t been seen in almost 3 decades.
As beautiful as the finished masterpiece James captured in oil paint, this new discovery holds a window to James’ soul with notes and poetry in James’ hand.
In these notes, James is saying for us to go back and take another look at Princess of the Lake, and see the story in a totally different way. Each of James’ individual artworks, he lets his artwork speak for him with depth of story and emotion. Included below the video are the 8 isolated handwritten notes on the edges of the drawing.
I will let James speak for himself with this note/poem that is part of this week’s Rediscovered Art.

Dreams can be so weird
When they come out of the night
and Materialize on canvas in the light.
Things move and change
And take on life of their own
That I can not explain
or control.
Hell, what do I know
I just cut open my guts
And paint what comes out.
It’s all a mystery to me
I just need a hand to hold onto
To keep me from flying away.
